Graveside services to be held on Sunday, June 17th, at 1:00 PM at Second Home Cemetery, 3705 South 43rd Street, Milwaukee.

Max was born on August 14, 1923 in Milwaukee. He attended North Division High School and graduated from the University of WI, Madison. He enlisted in the 1st Army, Checkerboard Division 99th Infantry, Company L, 394th Regiment. Max was captured in the Battle of the Bulge. He escaped from a prison farm with the help of a young German Lufftewaffe pilot, Karl Kirchner, who also wanted to escape from the Nazi regime. They formed a successful mutual pact to escape together. After the war Max sponsored Karl’s entry into the United States. They remained close for the rest of their lifetimes. Max recently wrote a book about their experiences which the family plans to publish in the near future.

Among many military medals, Max was awarded the Purple Heart and in 2009 was named a “Chevalier” of the Legion of Honor by the French Government. Max was the Owner and President of Century Hardware Corporation. They were originally located on 3rd St. and in the 1950’s he moved his business to Woolworth Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to The Jewish National Fund appreciated.
