Gordon, Sam Age 95, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 6, 2008.
He was born to Sarah and Isadore Gordon in Russia on February 12, 1912, and moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio in 1914. He worked in the produce business in several Wisconsin cities until 1940 when he married Ruth Shapiro and settled in Manitowoc. He was actively involved in the Manitowoc Jewish Community and the Elks Club where he enjoyed golf, bridge, many friendships and had an active social life. He moved to Milwaukee with his wife and two daughters in l960 to take over General Produce Company, a poultry brokerage firm. With the success of that business, he went on with his nephews to open the House of Gordon which processed portion control poultry items. In 1976 he was named Man of the Year by the National Independent Poultry and Food Distributors Association, an award granted by his peers and one that he prized. He was active in business until he retired in his early seventies.
A life member of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun and an active member of Brynwood Country Club, he had friendships with people of all ages and was universally known as a "terrific guy." He will be remembered for his dynamic personality, his amazing ability to deal with adversity and his incredible optimistic view of life. He will be sorely missed by his daughters, Pam Kriger and Ellyn Bold; his grandchildren, Jason Kriger, Sarah and Milton Hwang and Merritt Bold; his beloved great-grandchildren, Landen Bold and Ethan Hwang; his sister and brother-in-law, Nate and Ida Ross; many nieces and nephews and a vast list of friends.
The family would like to thank his caregivers for enabling him to live at home in comfort and ease these many years: Bessie Odum, Elizabeth King, Latonia Bowie, Cheryl Nowak and Edward Tyson, Rosie Touchtone, and Eloise Wall.
Services will be held at Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun, 2020 W. Brown Deer Rd., Milwaukee on Tuesday, January 8, at 2:00 PM. Burial to follow at Greenwood Cemetery, 2615 W. Cleveland Ave., Milwaukee.
